Mac Deleted File Recovery Tool

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.5.x and above (including Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion & Mavericks)

Mac OS X is a Graphical User Interface based operating system developed by Apple Inc. There have been different versions of Mac starting from Grail1Z4, Hera, and Kodiak to the recent Leopard and Snow Leopard. The latest version of Mac OS X is Lion. Mac OS X operating system has some efficient built-in applications like iTunes for music, iPhoto for images and safari as a browser, etc. Mac OS X uses two different file systems, which are HFS and HFS+. Compared to Windows operating system Mac is highly secure (virus free) and reliable but when it comes to user interface and compatibility issues Windows is better than Mac OS.

Each volume on Mac consists of four kinds of items i.e. files, directories, directory threads and file threads. Each item is described by a catalog record. A Macintosh file consists of two components or forks. One is resource fork which is an indexed file contains code segments, menu items, dialog boxes, etc and another one is data fork which contains the stream of bytes (actual data).

Like Windows and other operating system, deletion of files is a common problem in Mac OS and therefore a file recovery software is essential to restore deleted Mac files from Lion, Leopard and Snow Leopard. Let us have walk through a few scenarios which results in deletion of files.

  • Most of the people prefer to delete the unwanted files, which are stored in hard drives or any other storage devices to avail the space occupied by such files for reuse. Sometimes the deleted files turns out to be important files in future, like today you may delete a word file related to your work thinking it is not important but after few days, your superior may ask for it but the file might already have been deleted.
  • A file can be deleted in Mac OS X from Terminal using a command "rm". This command can be used with two options. If just use "rm" the file goes to Trash folder but "rm -rf" command will make the file bypass the Trash folder. When the file goes to the Trash folder, it is possible to restore it easily, but when it bypasses Trash you need to undelete Mac Trash using a good Mac File Recovery Tool

Whenever you delete a file in Mac OS X, only the contents of resource fork associated with the deleted file will be cleared but the contents of data fork, still exist on the device. As mentioned before, the actual data which user saves in a file resides in data fork. With the help of a data recovery tool, it is possible to restore files on Mac volume or on any storage media before overwriting it with new data. Once the storage device is overwritten, it is impossible to retrieve the file. So whenever you plan to retrieve a file after deletion from any storage device, make sure that it is not overwritten with any new data. It is always better to take some precautionary measures to avoid the overwriting of any storage device from which you want to retrieve the deleted file.

Some such precautionary measures are listed below:

  • Once you confirm that an important file is deleted from your hard drive, stop using it.
  • Always use different device to store the restored file rather than using the same device from which you are restoring a file.
  • Never give a long gap for recovery of a file after deletion. Retrieve your deleted file as soon as possible.

As mentioned earlier, if the storage device is not overwritten, then you can retrieve the deleted file using some Mac undelete software. The software will help you to get back your important file in a secure way without harming its contents.

Mac File Undelete Software is one such popular utility which helps to undelete your files which are deleted in Mac OS X. This utility includes an advanced scanning algorithm with which it can undelete files from SD Card on Mac and any other storage media which works on MAC OS X like iPods, FireWire drives, removable storage devices, USB drives, etc. Using this tool you can preview the restored file before restoration and a built-in "Find Tool" helps to find files in the restored data list. You can also use this tool to undelete Mac files from FireWire drives and also restore iPod Shuffle songs on Mac OS X. The software supports recovery of files from various MacBook models and helps to recover deleted MOV file from MacBook Pro easily.
