Hard drive is the main storage of a system from where it can process data and perform read-write operations on it. All our files and folders are saved into the hard drive. Losing data from your hard drive due to accidental formatting is a common issue. Inadvertent formatting of hard drive results in huge data loss. Many a times people accidentally or unknowingly format their hard drive and lose their important documents, photos, audio and video files etc that are stored in it. Complete formatting erases the entire hard disk's data and scans the drive for bad sectors but quick formatting just deletes the root directory along with a couple of other things. Accidental formatting of hard drive results in painful loss of files and folders.  So, it is always important to take a backup of all important files and folders to avoid such miserable situations.

Various formatting data loss scenarios:

  • Accidental formatting: When you accidentally format your hard drive, while formatting some external hard drive then, everything present on your hard drive is erased from it. In such situation stop using your hard drive immediately.
  • Reformatting: Sometimes you may need to change one file system to other file system. For example during the file system conversion from HFS+ to HFSX file system if an errors occurs it can result in corruption of the partition.
  • Improper backup of data before formatting: If the backup of data from hard drive becomes corrupted or inaccessible due to storage on corrupted media or any other reason then also you lose data after formatting. So it is always compulsory to check if the backup is proper before formatting a drive.

If you have also lost your files and want to undelete files from formatted drive there is no need to worry because in all the data loss situations discussed above the files are still present in the memory. Those files are residing as raw data which cannot be accessed manually but they can be recovered easily with the help of a recovery tool provided it is not overwritten i.e. if you have accidentally formatted your storage drive or you have lost files while re-formatting then immediately stop using that drive.
